Hydraulic cylinders
The basis for every cylinder selection is the application!
Differential Cylinder:
- Double-acting hydraulic cylinder -
Retracts and extends hydraulically. Piston area and volume differentiate to ring area and ring volume. The area ratio must be taken into account since a pressure ratio also takes place here. It should also be noted that with a constant pump delivery volume, the cylinder retracts faster due to the lower volume on the ring side.

Synchronous Cylinder:

With continuous piston rod. Force and speed are "the same" in both directions due to the same volumes and areas.

Single-acting hydraulic cylinder:
Double-acting cylinder, where one oil port is either provided with ventilating filter (internal risk of corrosion!) or one oil port is led to the tank empty.
Single-acting cylinders work in one direction only! It can be used as a push cylinder (extend only, retract by counterweight or external force) or as a pull cylinder (retract only, extend by counterweight or external force).

The counterforce is provided by an internal spring.
Here it is to be considered that the spring is preloaded (DANGER) and also requires appropriate installation space, therefore useful up to approx. 100 mm stroke.

Plunger cylinder:
- Single-acting hydraulic cylinder -
Extends hydraulically only and is retracted by counterweight or external force.
Standard up to 100 mm rod diameter and 1000mm stroke, special also beyond that up to approx. max 200mm rod diameter and 7.5 meter stroke. Beyond this, it is essential to agree whether it is possible.
Types:
- without mechanical stop - "simplest design for simplest applications".
- with mechanical stop - "simple to medium application".
- with second guide on the piston - "simple to medium application with long strokes" (guide value => stroke over 10x rod diameter)
- with end-position cushioning Bottom side - "for comfort applications
Please ensure sufficient counterweight! Guideline for counterweight => 1x cylinder weight (but min. 10Kg.)

Standard series:
Double-acting Telescopic cylinder:
Multi-stage cylinder, retracts and extends hydraulically.
Allows small installation space, oil supply on the rod or optionally on the cylinder body (max 4 stages).
To be noted: Cylinder makes step changes. This means that the cylinder becomes faster when changing to the next "smaller" stage while the pump delivery volume remains the same. The force becomes smaller in accordance with the area at constant pressure.
Good to very good delivery options
Single-acting Telescopic cylinder:
Multi-stage cylinder, extends only, retracts by counterweight or external force.
Allows small installation space (e.g.: dump truck). Oil feed usually on the cylinder body. For certain applications, the oil feed is through the rod.
To be noted: Cylinder makes step changes. This means that the cylinder becomes faster when changing to the next "smaller" stage while the pump delivery volume remains the same. The force becomes smaller in accordance with the area at constant pressure.

Allows small installation space. Oil supply on the rod and on the cylinder body (max 4 stages). Partially also possible with both oil connections on the cylinder body.
To note: Cylinder makes none Stage jumps. This means that the cylinder moves with the same pump delivery volume when changing to the next "smaller" stage. same Speed. The force decreases according to the area at constant pressure.

Allows small installation space (e.g. dump truck). Oil feed usually on the cylinder body. For certain applications, the oil is fed through the rod.

Front lifting cylinder:
This is not an actual cylinder description but rather an application description. These are single-acting telescopic cylinders used in commercial vehicles for tipping containers via the outermost pivot point (cylinder sits directly behind the cab, on the tipping container!).

Standard series:
Front lifting cylinder Double-acting:
Front lifting cylinder with at least one double-acting stage.
This is necessary when the tilt angle exceeds a certain level and the proper retraction of the cylinder by counterweight is not guaranteed.
Same application as front lifting cylinders with the advantage of guaranteed recovery and the possibility of a defined retraction. Often only one stage is double-acting.
